History
Founded in 1962 as the Volunteer Bureau by the Soroptimist Club and Junior League, the Volunteer Center of Sacramento originally functioned as a center for senior citizens. By 1965, the Volunteer Center of Sacramento expanded to serve volunteers of all ages.
Beginning in 1976, the Volunteer Center began to operate the regions only Alternative Sentencing Program (ASP). ASP’s primary purpose is to provide alternative sentencing, also known as court ordered community service, for adult and juvenile offenders referred through the Sacramento County Court system.
Throughout the 1990’s VCS served as the coordinating agency for all local United Way non-profit agencies and volunteer opportunities.
From 2000 to 2005, VCS launched its first volunteer matching website, managed the Youth Empowerment Academy (YEA) which taught local high school students how to make a positive impact in our community, and worked with Americorps.
Since 2006, VCS has unveiled our Community Resource Center which offers volunteer opportunities and community resources to the public, introduced the Adopt-A-Family Program which brings food and gifts to families in need during the Holiday Season, and began the Birthday Wishes Program which provides fun, personalized and memorable birthday parties to children living in local homeless shelters.
Today, VCS continues to serve as a volunteer clearing house or central location for all volunteers to learn about new volunteer opportunities. To further our commitment to the community, we’ve created a cutting edge website so it’s easy to find quality volunteer opportunities and provide local non-profit organizations the volunteer support they need.
